Unlocking Potential Through Special Education

Meet our founder

Maggie Lusweti is the visionary founder of Kujenga Inclusive Game Changer School in Bungoma, Kenya. “Kujenga” is a Kiswahili word meaning “to build.” Raised by parents who instilled in her the transformative power of education, Maggie embraced the opportunities it provides. Her parents, dedicated educators and philanthropists, strongly believed in community service. Her mother, Rachel, was an elementary school teacher, leader of women’s groups, and successful farmer and entrepreneur. Her father, Jeremiah, was a respected educator and a founding member of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). Maggie’s commitment to education and community development is further evidenced by her service as a board member and volunteer for Able and Willing, a Frederick-based non-profit that has supported school construction in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Maggie’s work continues to inspire and bring hope to those in need.

Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Digital and Social Gap at Sirisia Special School

Bridging the Digital and Social Gap at Sirisia Special School
We are thrilled to celebrate a vital connection and partnership with our sister school, Sirisia Special School.

Previously isolated from global resources, Sirisia’s students faced significant barriers to modern learning and communication. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Kujenga’s Director and Founder, Maggie Lusweti, that gap has been bridged.

The school is now fully equipped with a TV and connectivity, a crucial gift that does more than just provide information. It opens a window to the world, giving students access to engaging, regulated programs after school. This monitored screen time is key to helping students develop essential social skills, understanding group dynamics, and fostering **engaging interactions with global content, all while ensuring their safety and well-being. This donation is transforming how their learners connect, communicate, and grow. –COMMENTS:Please remove the asterisk signs in the text. Thanks

Right to Education

The Cornerstone of Inclusive Education

Educating all children, regardless of their differences, is the cornerstone of inclusive education. Unfortunately, children around the world are still excluded from the schools where they belong. This exclusion happens because of factors like disability, race, language, religion, gender, or poverty. However, every child fundamentally holds the right to be supported by their parents and community to learn and grow. They deserve to be accepted and included by both teachers and peers alike.

The Power of an Inclusive Classroom

An inclusive classroom operates as a unified learning environment. Specifically, general education teachers and special education teachers work in sync to meet the individualized needs of all students. This collaboration is highly effective. Furthermore, research clearly shows that inclusion is beneficial for every student, not just those receiving special education services.

Benefits for All Students

Students with special education needs are less likely to miss school when they are in inclusive classes. Consequently, they develop stronger skills in language and mathematics. They are also more likely to be employable and often pursue education after high school. Crucially, neurotypical students benefit, as well. They learn tolerance, develop higher self-esteem, and ultimately understand the true meaning of diversity and caring friendships.
